SAT GUS, a satellite launched by NASA engineer Mark Rober, is making it's rounds orbiting Earth's atmosphere. A photograph of Mrs. Griffin's 6th grade class was submitted and SAT GUS took a space selfie and "beamed" it back for us to see. The satellite zips through space at 17,000 miles per hour, orbits 300 miles above Earth and she completes a full trip around the planet every 90 minutes, snapping selfies along the way. The image was taken exactly over the latitude/longitude for SMGS with the curvature of earth's surface in the background! . A huge thank you to Mrs. Griffin's daughter, Briley, for submitting the class photo for the amazing project!!!

SMGS 6th graders for 2024-25

Mrs. Kerwin’s 3rd graders had a special opportunity to switch roles and become the teacher for the day! Each student chose a topic they were excited to teach to Mrs. Kerwin and their classmates. The lessons included everything from golfing, planting flowers, and throwing a football to making cookie dough, crocheting, slime-making, shooting a basketball, braiding, and creating a salad. Some students were taught how to make homemade bubbles, solve math problems, build a Gimkit game, pitch a softball, and even how to bat!
These third graders truly rose to the occasion, delivering engaging lessons that kept everyone interested and involved. The best part? Watching how patient, kind, and helpful each student was in their new role as teacher. What a fun and impressive day of learning!

Friday we celebrated the retirement of our own Carol Flynn. Carol has dedicated 22 years to SMGS shaping the minds of our SPED students. She has always been a steadfast advocate for each student who enters her room. Thank you Mrs. Flynn for all you have done for our SMGS family!

SMGS representatives competing in Battle of the Books travelled to Emporia State University for the state finals. While they did not bring home first place they were wonderful role models and representatives of what our bear family is about. Way to go Bears!

2nd and third graders traveled to Topeka Civic Center to see the play Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. The students were able to get a backstage tour and they all received the book Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus as well. Third grader, Alissa's, aunt Melissa was in the play as the pigeon!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to the threat of severe weather, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony. The event will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 6:00 PM.
This decision was not made lightly, but the safety of our students, families and staff is always our top priority.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
